A key aspect of the minor genius philosophy is using style and elegance to enhance your lifestyle, and by extension, your mastery of your creative and spiritual journey.

For this edition of our in-house style column Sartorial Genius, we’re going to help you discover your next perfect winter coat or jacket.

Let’s get down.

Happy New Year!

We’re officially halfway through the dead of winter, which means that it’s a great time for copping your next winter coat or jacket.

Not only will most heavy duty outwear be on sale, you’ll also have a cool 75 or so days to funk around with your new piece and get to know it before true spring (aka the ten days when it's between 58 and 72 degrees) hits.

For this edition of Sartorial Genius I hand picked a range of  coats and jackets from eBay steals to Black Card-worthy investment pieces that elegantly straddle the line between basic and bold. You could say these garments are all JFE (Just Funky Enough) - they’ll bring some subtle positive attention to your fit, but are chill enough to play nice with stuff you already own.

Here goes!

Raglan Sleeve Coats

When it comes to winter coats that can be worn over blazers and suits, I’m not a super big fan of topcoats (those classic three button coats with suit-like lapels on the front that hit right above the knee) as they feel a little too formal and old-timey to me.

I much prefer a raglan sleeve overcoat, which has a sportier, more bohemian feel to it. A raglan sleeve just means that the sleeves connect to the arm via a seam in the collar, versus a seam in the shoulder. This extra distance across the back of the coat gives you a much wider range of motion - and it looks dope as hell. These are heavily fashionable on the streets right now and with good reason. They make everyone who wears one look like a famous actor - or their arty cousin.

A few top contenders include:

This blue boucle (aka fuzzy) number from J. Crew.

This vintage (80s?) charcoal grey joint from Cecil Gee, a famous clothier from London who used to dress the Beatles.

And finally, the don dada, this swoon-worthy black and cream herringbone stunner from NYC-based artisans Wythe.
